All About Acura ILX 2018
The 2018 Acura ILX is a subcompact executive car for Honda’s luxury brand Acura. All ILX variants are based upon Honda Civic Sedan. The ILX is also Acura’s first gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle. This car is also one of the most affordable ways to get a luxury vehicle experience paying less than $30,000.
The Grunt of ILX
Looking at the spec sheet of the 2018 Acura ILX, one might find a rev-satisfying 201 horsepower inline-four which is then paired to a high-zoot 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The unfortunate part here is that all this is then paired to a chassis tuned more for comfort than for some corner-carving.
All of the ILXs available use a 2.0 liter inline 4 rated at 201 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque. This peak horsepower comes on at a heady 6,800 rpm. but the standard 8-speed dual-clutch makes getting to that grunt an absolute joy. As a result, the engine is smooth and winds out quickly.
The 8 speed also features a torque converter that takes the edge off the transmission’s shifts. The paddle shifters that are fitted to every 2018 Acura ILX are a joy to snap through their paces.
Talking about the wheels, the 2018 Acura ILX review sports a grippy, thick-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel which also suggests a sporting demeanor. But unfortunately, the electric power steering in the ILX is light and filters out too much of the road. As a result of both of these, while on one hand, the ILX’s handling is certainly safe, smooth and secure, it’s far too short of entertaining.
Symmetry is Perfection
2018 Acura ILX review, gives an idea about the symmetrical dashboard groups most switches and controls in the center. Though it’s not the most striking or creative look, it sure gets the job done.
The models with included navigation have the dashboard feature two separate screens, a layout albeit not particularly elegant but works fairly well. Much less appealing are the box like air vents it the dash above the glove box on the passenger’s side.
Unfortunately, there aren’t many options in the hues of the interior of the ILX as it can only be swathed in bland light gray and the coal mine black interior shades with most of the exterior hues. Tho a warmer tan is available as well, but that too only with a white or red exterior hue.
Acura Loses its beak
While there’s nothing unpleasant about the exterior design of the 2018 Acura ILX, it still feels a bit cliched and old at this point in time. This is especially noticeable when compared to the Honda’s stylish Civic after all the ILX is based on that car only.
A toned down version of the company’s signature beak front fascia is featured on this ILX. Acura is noticeably begun to abandon this look on its newer models. From the side, the ILX’s proportions are pretty absurd and weird due to its relatively low roofline and an unnecessary upward curve to its beltline.
In the rear of the ILX, the awkward design continues with the two red reflectors taking up space where a pair of exhaust pipes should’ve gone rather.
Equipped with all safety measures
Like the previous Acura and Honda vehicles before it, the 2018 ILX is generally considered as a safe and secure vehicle as it performed well in the federal and independent crash testing and even offers a wide range of advanced safety tech at such a reasonable price.
All of the 2018 ILX Sedans include six airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control, and a rearview camera as well. Acurawatch, the automaker’s name for its suite of safety tech that includes automatic emergency braking, active lane control, blind spot monitors and adaptive cruise control, comes with a reasonable price on the base model of 2018 Acura ILX.
As for the safety rating by the federal crash testing, the 2018 Acura ILX has been rated five stars in the overall category, though it was given a lower four stars rating for frontal crash and rollover safety.
Final Call on Acura ILX
This one is actually a mixed bag, with some features very impressive to some downright absurd. But if you’re someone who values a smooth and secure drive with your family with a great fuel economy as well and isn’t that high on your budget, then for sure the 2018 Acura ILX is your ride of choice.
Even for those looking for a budget car with a considerably rev-happy engine and excellent transmission, the 2018 Acura ILX will meet their needs.
But if the car’s both interior and exterior styling is something of ample importance to you, it’s doubtful this is the right one for you.
