5 Deadly Link Building Sins

Link building is inevitable because this gets your website more traffic and improves website’s visibility in the organic search results.

Don’t be overly happy because you know every coin has two sides and link building is not an exception to it.

It has one more side that says links must follow the guidelines of the search engines; otherwise, they will invite penalties by Google.

About links, Google says, “any links intended to manipulate PageRank or a site’s ranking in Google search results may be considered a part of a link scheme and a violation of Google’s Webmaster Guidelines. This includes any behavior that manipulates links to your site or outgoing links from your site.”

Primarily, link building is done to boost a website’s rank, and the secondarily, it is done to increase the website’s traffic.

Here, you need to understand that Google does not disapprove links, but it counts them as a major ranking factor, and the thing that it disapproves is any such efforts that look you are trying to manipulate its rankings for a particular keyword. So, you need to be smart enough that your link building campaign should not reveal you are doing it against Google’s guidelines.  Here are some link building mistakes that people often make, despite having a great website with active content.

#1. Buying Links

Money can buy you anything but not those high-quality links that can make your way easy to obtain top rankings. Many webmasters sell links, but their links will have a reverse impact on results because Google considers such link against its guidelines and so it could penalize your website.

#2. Exchanging Links

Google does not hold well with link exchanging. Google has disapproved it because many business owners started exchanging links as they found it an easy way to earn links. Therefore, Google had to call it a spam strategy to links. If you have one or two exchanged links that are okay, but if the number is high then you can come on the defaulters’ list of the search engine.

#3. Links from Porn, Escort, and Gambling Websites

To increase the number of links and manipulate the rankings of Google, many link builders would make links from sites with a bad reputation like porn, escort, and gambling websites. This was irritating for Google, so Google banned it. According to Ranking By SEO, “you are supposed to build links from relevant websites only, and it should appear natural.” If you want to irritate the search engine, despite knowing this, you will have to pay a big price for it by losing the ranking of your website.

#4. Links from Spam Content Marketing Websites

Earning links through content marketing is believed to be the best way to building links, but you need to be careful in the selection of the websites. You cannot select just any website that allows you to publish your content. You must check if the content marketing website allows only high-quality articles or poor quality spam articles too. You must avoid any such website that allows poor quality content because the chances are high that such websites may be penalized by Google anytime, so why to take a chance?

#5. Not Doing Link Auditing

Auditing the links is equally important as building them. Suppose you have created a link today from a website that is good today as per the Google’s guidelines, but nobody knows the future. Think in future that website is considered as a spam website then the link to your website will also become a spam link. To identify such links, link auditing is necessary from time to time. Those who don’t do link audits of their link profiles may suffer in a bad ranking or loss of ranking in the search results. So, don’t take the chance.

By avoiding these deadly link building sins, you can earn high-quality links that will help your website come out as a hero.
